Cost lever
Casement
A single sash hinged on the side that cranks fully open like a door.
What it means for you
The tightest-sealing operable window — locking pulls the whole sash against the frame, so it's the least drafty and the most egress-efficient (nearly the whole opening counts, so a smaller unit can pass code). Great over a kitchen sink. Costs more for the crank hardware, and an open sash catches wind.
Where you'll see it
Kitchens, hard-to-reach spots, and bedrooms that need egress in a small wall opening.
