Butt joint
Where the ends of two siding panels meet in the same course. On vinyl they overlap; on fiber cement they're a caulked or flashed seam.
What it means for you
A workmanship tell. Good crews stagger butt joints course to course so seams don't stack into a visible vertical line, and keep them away from sightlines. Stacked or gapped joints are a sign of a rushed job.
